Jazz is a music genre born in early 20th century New Orleans with improvisation at its core. Louis Armstrong's trumpet solos, Duke Ellington's orchestral arrangements and Miles Davis' modal jazz revolution are milestones of the genre. Scat singing, swing rhythm and blues scales are characteristic features of jazz. In Turkey, jazz began developing from the 1950s onward. Names like İlhan Mimaroğlu and Okay Temiz achieved international success. Today, while Istanbul Jazz Festival hosts world-renowned musicians, young jazz musicians experiment with fusing traditional Turkish music and jazz.
